It's a vague question I know, but why not.

What kind of numbers / traffic / clicks to you think is needed before you could earn enough from advertising from your site / sites.

Forget referral advertising where people have to buy stuff and you get a slice, I mean mostly cpc stuff.

Or is that a really off the wall question?

Depends completely on a lot of factors.

But I do know of a couple of people making a living from advertising on their site. Not many people making much money from it though, but I do know of one case in America where a gardener is making $10k a month, but then I know of people who puts hours in every day, and would be lucky to get even €1k in a year.

I'm speaking as an onlooker now, i'm as clueless as the next... i've only ever received one adsense cheque in my life, and that was for less than two hundred dollars, but that was with very little effort also. In fact, i probably had to go to more effort to cash the cheque in because i was being asked (challenged quite sternly) in the bank where did I get the money from (Look at the big fúcking google logo you idiot!!!)..

But if you have a good site, then there's no reason why advertising wouldn't pay off, but you would need a lot of unique visitors and would need your ads very strategically placed also.

It all depends on how much you need to live, for some €2k would be enough per month to live off, and for others they would need significantly more.

If you are talking CPC , then you need to consider the niche, as some niches pay more. You can expect to get 30-50% of the Google Keyword bid, so check out the tool for a specific keyword and do the math.

For an average site CTR could be as low as 1.5% or could be as high as 7-8% , depending on what type of site you run.

So now you know CTR ranges, the CPC, and possibly how much you need. After that it should be a trivial excerise to calculate what you need.

Thanks for this - I've never seen it put so simply!

Paul has hit the nail on the head.

If you start off as a publisher, probably the best way to kick off earning is with well integrated CPC ads, and loads of good content.

Concentrate on this for a while, get your content good and ranking well, and also optimise your CPC placements, then keep adding content even more - a few new items a day is good.

Once you have your CPC revenue sorted and fairly solid, then look at selling display space either through a network or by yourself.

Also, get a newsletter subscription box up there and get collecting email addresses. These can be very useful for CPA stuff / offers etc.

Don't forget, there are also other ads which you can stick on your website and traffic counts doesn't matter because you get a fix amount per page per month. Now multiply by that with the number of websites you have or you will create. :D

Try this one

You will qualify for a £10 joining fee as long as your website(s) is approved. Good thing is, they pay via paypal, like a clockwork each month.

As for rules, it's on the website so read through. It is unlikely that you'll get their approval if one of your websites fall into the following categories:-
Prescription meds, involving spamming
Porn
Hate site etc

Basically, they are looking for clean sites. You can run your adsense simultaneously but they won't like you running other banners.

It is a nice earner for me. I have been with them for over a year now.
Hope you'll have success with it.

That's strange cos my friend's application went through without a problem this afternoon in fact. Did you completed the required field? Obviously you have to enter a URL of your website where the ads will be shown as well. If you still don't have any joy, you could try contacting them.

working today but seriously any form that has the following instructions

Please ensure the 3 URL's you submit in your application are within the same domain, an example would be:
If your site only contains one page, submit the same URL 3 times.

i think it is fairly easy to earn a few hundred from cpc each month - gets harder to get higher due to maintenance.

My earning are reasonable - but they would not keep me living in Dublin - maybe other places in Europe.

Wrote a post that touched on this tonight God, 200 Posts | Life in Ireland

If I could go back a few years with what I know now I would build one really big site over time, one that I could rank for niches within it as i went along but continually heading towards the big number keywords over time.

But now I have 50+ little sites - but I have been working on that one big one over the last year and expect it to take another year to make some decent money - also have found it is a good idea to build sites in areas that you have an interest - it gets quite difficult to build long term just for the money if you have no interest in the area - i have 16 food sites half built because of that thinking.

Even better if you have an idae that is just diferent. now that is the way to go.

completely - you can generate a much better site if its an area that you are passionate about - thinking cash won't be enough

Tonnes.... too many!

I estimate that if I wanted to make a modest 2000 Euros a month off my site in Google Ads I'd need 1165730 page impressions... so won't be quitting the day job quite yet :)
