Has the Google page count operator (site:example.com) gone strange in the last month or so?

If I check site:HosterStats.com: Domain Registration Statistics And Historical DNS Database it provides "About 951,000 results". Adding inurl:HosterStats.com: Domain Registration Statistics And Historical DNS Database to the search changes things somewhat and provides "About 28,400,000 results".

Trying the same thing with the Irish Times:
site:The Irish Times - Breaking Local and International News from Ireland = About 1,140,000 results
site:The Irish Times - Breaking Local and International News from Ireland inurl:The Irish Times - Breaking Local and International News from Ireland = About 4,110,000 results

Trying this with boards.ie:
site:boards.ie - Now Ye're Talkin' = About 8,840,000 results
site:boards.ie - Now Ye're Talkin' inurl:boards.ie - Now Ye're Talkin' = About 48,000,000 results

Google had announced something in Webmaster Tools to show the index status of websites (it is in the Site Health menu). It is close to some of the numbers returned by the site: and inurl: operators but there is a difference. Does the site: number reflect some kind of fresh index figure and the site: and inurl: number reflect some kind of supplementary index?
