My site is in a sub folder. Should I move it to the root directory?

From an seo perspective, my site is currently sitting in a sub folder and I'm using an index.htm file to tell the browser where my site is sitting.
Would it help my search engine rankings if I moved my site from the sub folder to the root directory? Or does it make a difference? Thanks

From an seo perspective...
Forget about SEO in cases like this. Does it help your users having the site in the sub folder? Would it make more sense (and make for easier navigability) to have the site at the root? (In most cases, having it at the root will be preferable for users)

Minor SEO benefits shouldn't end up impacting on the user experience (which would cause more of an SEO impact in the long run). Always think about your users first and foremost.

erm how are you using the index.htm file to tell search engines / people this ? It doesn't sound like a good idea ... you'd normally do it with a redirect ... any reason why you've got it in a subfolder ?
