I'm embarking on creating a web application. It will be a facebook app to start and then have a web services layer to expose it to iphone and android apps.

Having a bit of a debate with a colleague on what to develop it on. My preference has always been for PHP, but he prefers .NET.

I've just came across the Yii Framework - Yii Framework: Best for Web 2.0 Development

I guess it depends on which you are more comfortable with. A lot of big sites use php, a lot use .net

I agree, stick with the programming language that is most comfortable with you.

with that said... if you are just starting out your programming career = go with .Net. It is truely a OO programming language vs sudo OO php, has a much better support base, used by a lot enterprise companies. Both php and .Net can access data natively to MySQL (which is free and great for startups). Lastly if budget is concerned and you are compfortable using linux/unix OS then check out the MONO project for hosting .net app for free.

Best of luck to you.
