We launched a separate site for our VPS hosting (VPS hosting - virtuozzo parallels debian centos windows 2003) about two months ago, but it's not doing very well in SERPS

What I keep finding is that our blog (Blacknight Blog) or even our knowledgebase do better than the actual site where we sell the products

It's very frustrating :(

Has anyone got any tips for ranking quickly on certain key phrases? I know it's a crazy query, but I'm plucking at straws at this stage

Not too sure what the problem is to be honest. What keywords are you trying to rank for?

The obvious ones at the moment :)

Things like "vps hosting" etc., ie. nothing that bizarre or outlandish (at least in my mind!)

Michele is there a reason why you have it on a separate domain ?

We didn't have much choice :(

The main site carries all the info on our shared hosting and we had hoped to be able to relaunch that first or at the same time as the VPS hosting, but we ran into technical issues. So our choice was quite simple:

  • wait for the issues to get sorted out and lose money
  • launch the vps stuff on a separate site and not lose as much money
You can guess which option won out :)

I'd say its perfectly normal for your other domain to be ranking higher as it has the age trust with Google it would also have a lot more quality links coming in which includes links to the blog from the VPS site.

Cormac Google will never show how many backlinks a site actually has unless you have access to the owners Google Webmaster Account. I see there is no XML sitemap on the site. Have you considered attaching it to the webmaster account Michele?

You need to be careful on how fast you want to get a site to rank, 1 wrong step and you could see a filter in action.

I'm seeing you sitting at number 21 for VPS hosting in Ireland. I would suggest getting some more quality links and using the anchor keywords you want to rank for.

when was the last time the domain was spidered (google webmaster) ? There are also some errors on the site.

Maybe change the robots.txt to
User-agent: *
Disallow:

Do you have a sitemap for the site ?

Reg the domain for 10 years.

Pay for a Yahoo! and Business.com listing.

Submit product pages to digg.com

Get a DMOZ listing. (There are ALWAYS ways).

Build more authority.

New domains are getting harder and harder to rank and are spending a LOT longer than 3 months in the "sandbox".

Throw a link into the footer of this site.

I'll send you a list of long tails later.

where is the index page description pulled from?
www . com, net, org, biz, info, name, tv, eu, co.uk, org.uk, me.uk. Money Back Guarantee. VPS Hosting. E-mail, personal sites, basic business sites, ...
I could not find it in the source code

Done

Pay for a Yahoo! and Business.com listing.

They don't accept paid listings from Europe anymore, or has that changed?
Submit product pages to digg.com
Isn't that a bit blackhat?
Get a DMOZ listing. (There are ALWAYS ways).
I'll have to look into that. Who do I need to bribe? :)

Easier said than done :(

Yes :(

Throw a link into the footer of this site.
That's easy enough to do :) I can probably shove it in a couple of other site footers as well
I'll send you a list of long tails later.
Cool

You could try to improve the home page a little to enhance the targeted keywords.

1. Add an H1 tag (you do have H2 and H3)
2. Add a page description int the meta tags otherwise SE will pick whatever is top level and in this case it seems you have some links that is not going to help (home - about us - contact - etc...)
3. Check targeted keyword density on the page
4. submit the URL to few directories
5. is this page title really important? "virtuozzo parallels debian centos windows 2003"
will you not be better changing it to "Virtual ..... Hosting"? and probably add Ireland at the end if you are trying to get rank for that as well.

The meta content has finally been fixed on the main page - there was an odd issue with the CMS

I'll be looking at the code again to see if there's anything we can do. Adding more text to it will be awkward without mucking up the layout

That's been fixed. I had it in the cms, but for some odd reason the CMS wasn't outputting it. Thankfully the guys in Web Design Ireland & Online Marketing Ireland - Web Design Company Ireland - Welcome: 2bscene were able to fix that for us!
3. Check targeted keyword density on the page

I think the main page is going to be a problem for this as outlined above. I might need to focus on the inner pages
4. submit the URL to few directories

I have been :)

If you can recommend any please do

"Ireland" isn't relevant tbh

We're primarily interested in "vps hosting", "virtuozzo" and probably a few of the distros at the moment. Of course I need to do more keyword research, but based on my own checks our competitors rank very well for those kind of keywords / phrases

They might rank well but do they convert? I would imagine that "Virtual Private Server (VPS) Web Hosting Ireland" would yield a better conversion than your current title page.

Quick fixes are becoming more and more likely to be bad fixes TBH.

For a new domain I'd focus on quality backlinks initially. I'd also try to focus on contextual links (within body copy) than boilerplate and run-of-site links.

Create a page on BK dedicated to VPS and link within the body copy. Place a link from BK home to this page (1 click from root). Rinse and repeat with different copy on some of your other domains.

Maybe have a competiton or something to create some buzz with bloggers - those links are like manna from heaven. Sort out your aff program and think carefully about ways affs can link back cleanly without raising the ire of G. There are accepted ways for Affs to link cleanly.

Any old hosting related domains that you want to 'reverse' in there? Or even a few old hosting-related pages on other domains perhaps?

Most important is to keep it natural, and not to rush it. More and more bad things happening in G these days.

That's already been done: Zope, Tomcat, JBoss, UML Hosting Ireland - Specialist and UML Hosting: Blacknight Solutions

Though it could do with some tweaking

Not a bad idea :)

What would you suggest as a prize?

Unfortunately we seem to have hit a brick wall with this at the moment. I've been trying to get the Russians to understand what we want and they just don't seem to understand at all, which is very very frustrating

Not sure what you mean. Most of the other domains that we have aren't in use.

Maybe so, but I'm not feeling very patient :)

An iphone would cost you less than a vps package... Not very origianl, but you cant beat a 3g iphone competition for a bit of attention.

Something old with hosting related content that you could potentially 301 (I didn't suggest this BTW ;) )

You didn't put your money into VPS for a quick buck, so think long term.
