I just tried to start my PC this evening and it won't start up.
It looks like its loading until I get to the Black Windows screen then the whole system just turns off with no warning.

I then tried to start it in safe mode and same thing again.
I then pluged everything out that I don't need and tried it again.
I only got to the Windows login screen and it turned off again.

I'm using windows xp pro and have never had this problem before.
It seems to boot as far as the black windows screen then turns its self off with no messages.

Can anyone shead light on this issue.

It sounds like hardware failure.
Try without the keyboard as well.

Just as an update to my first post.

I tried to start the system in safe mode.
I got to the bios sellection screen for safe mode and left it to see what would happen. After about 30 seconds the system powered down again.

The only thing i can think of is a power supply problem, ram problem or CPU problem.

I'm thinking along the lines of Power Supply.

Unless anyone has other sugestions.

If you get to the BIOS, keep an eye on the temperature.
If one of the fans is not working it will go up very fast and shut down to protect the CPU.

Hi Louie

I checked the fans at start up and they are all running.
The motherboard is the Gigabyte M59SLI-S5 and is all silent pipe tec.

I am going to replace the power supply first as this could be the problem. Then I think it could be a processor problem.

I'm not getting any messages just complete power down so its hard to find the problem.

I'm pretty sure it has to be one of 3 things.
Power supply, Processor or RAM

Finding which one is the problem.

Just got a new power supply from PC World and some Thermal Paste for the CPU

Applied the paste and no joy.
Then installed a new power supply and the system is up and running fine now.

I always figured that a PSU problem with mean no power what so ever.
You learn something new every day.

On the upside:
Once I got into the system I gave it a really good clean out so its sparkling inside.

Its not a virus,
It was a Power supply Problem.

Also, just a point to note.
This is the second PSU installed in this system.

Ahh!
Is this a usual problem with the model you have.
is it worth getting a replacement from the makers if within warranty?

Its out of warranty sadly

I have used different PSU's each time.

The first was a Thermaltake then a Hyper now the one in it is a Switching PSU (can't see the make)

The one I put in now looks like it has less power then the one before. Don't really care as its working now :)
