URL - hyphen or underscore?

It's recently been brought to my attention that it's better to use a hyphen rather than an underscore when building directory paths in a URL.

For example:
www.mydomain.com/cd-collection/
is better than
www.mydomain.com/cd_collection
or
www.mydomain.com/cdcollection

Is this true? How much weight do SE's give this?

Have always used them anyway, easier to read and no confusion when highlighted. (Sometimes you cannot see the underscore)

And it wasn't noted in Matts post but cd-collection is preffered over cdcollection.
