Have a look at the density of your main competitior...

You'll get higher search engine rankings and more targeted traffic if you limit your keywords to two or three per page. Any more than that and your search engine rankings will be poor for each one

Hey guys I stuffed my index page with keywords and as a consequense i suffered. If i now remove them and clean it up will i move back up or i am forever going to be penalised?

No need to ever abandon a site if you clean it up it will be fine, it may take a while to notice changes.
Even if a domain has been blacklisted its possible to get it off, your site wont be blacklisted though just for keyword stuffing I imagine.

All in all though content is king.

Generally 6 to 8 Keywords required for 400 words article. But it depends on size of the article.

It depends....

Blacknight is quite right, I think. If your site is about BMW and sales and service and parts, and you have a page for each, you won't need keywords.

If however you have 10 sales pages (referring to different people, car models etc) - then you may add in kewords to differentiate between them, or if you want to cater for spelling mistakes (e.g. spelling kewords incorrectly as "Keywords" like I did )

So many beginners think you have to throw every possible keyword, any related ones and their cousins, you just end up diluting them and they become valueless. Keywords have some value but not an awful lot.
